It’s starting to get to that busy part of the semester… almost halfway through it! Friday I have my first communication law test, and while I like to think I’m pretty confident about my familiarity with this subject, there’s no point in not being super prepared.
So that’s where I’ll be until Friday, in my little law land, with brief intermissions for some story writing and interviews and photo editing.
Today at Oasis, the little boy I tutor was making all of the girl tutors Valentine’s Day cards. It was really cute. We combined the 1st and 3rd grades today because of the cold weather (the 1st graders don’t have a real room with heating for tutoring, only a closed in porch area) so things were a little hectic.
I worked with a little girl who usually keeps to herself, and was surprised with how behind she was compared to the other kids. I guess I assumed that if she wasn’t jumping up and begging for attention like the other kids, she didn’t need it. What a terrible, terrible misunderstanding. I can’t believe it never dawned on me that she was shy and ashamed, not just quiet. She was still speaking mainly in Spanish and really reluctant to do her homework. When writing a passage together she still used a lot of Spanish words (mainly verbs) and couldn’t form complete sentences.
I don’t know enough Spanish to really help her, so I’m going to have to recruit one of my fellow tutors to help next week. While we are all trying to teach them to use English more, she really needs to be able to express herself in Spanish.
The Elberton Star is running one of my fellow PJer’s shots from the other night on their website. Check it out. It was such a poignant moment, I’m glad he got it. As for me, I was way unprepared for that meeting. I definitely, definitely, learned my lesson.
Lots of learning going around these days. Who would have thunk?
Speaking of Elberton, I think for my next trip out in that direction, I’m going to go into Bowman. The Elberton Chamber of Commerce informed me that Bowman is trying to revitalize its small town personality as an antique resource, so that should be beautiful to shoot visually. I already know of some characters that way, so I can’t wait to really meet them. I’ve got some good ideas up my sleeve, and I’m very excited about the upcoming workshop.
Also, my very good friend Jeremy Dailey has moved and redirected his political blog to focus on the upcoming elections. While Jeremy and I don’t necessarily agree on everything political, I would be doing him and you a disservice if I failed to mention that he is very passionate and knowledgeable about the subject. It’s worth checking out, trust me.
