It’s the end of the first week of February, and I’m astonished at how time has flown. It makes me nervous, but I’m starting to get excited about everything that is ahead of me. Even though for the next couple of weeks I will be filling out many, many internship applications — I’m excited.
A word on internships. I was raised on the principle that I could do anything I set my mind to. In turn, this has resulted in a strange combination of interests, which is leading to a strange combination of applications. A lot of my peers are focusing all of their attention on what they perceive as ‘obtainable.’ Local papers, small news magazines, or online sites — and that’s fine. I’m sure I’ll be applying for many of those situations soon, and I would not, in anyway, be disappointed if that is where I landed this summer. Any internship will provide for me or any student a great opportunity to learn.
That being said, I’m applying for some huge internships that I may have no chance of getting. I’m fully aware that I’m not nearly as qualified as the probably thousands of other students applying for the White House internships. But I’m still applying anyway. I’m taking chance on things that I’m extremely passionate about, things that would really be a dream come true for me. I’m doing this in hopes that someone will take a chance on me as well.
The weather here has been dreadful, but it’s made for a wonderful week of indoor studying, writing, editing — I’m getting organized. I’m extremely into all of my classes, and sometimes I wonder why I ever leave school at all.
Things for me are about to get even busier, big time editing is coming up, along with some fantastic Grady Journal stories.
Oh yeah, I definitely want an iPad. I definitely want to design for the iPad. Imagine magazines for the iPad! At the Atlanta Photojournalism Conference, Sports Illustrated photographer, Bill Frakes, showed us this tablet preview of what the potential Sports Illustrated tablet edition could look like.
Needless to say, I was very excited.

An iPad, eh? It definitely has a lot of potential, but I don’t see us reading magazines off of it anytime in the near future. Apple needs to make it more than simply a large iTouch before it can take his into a new generation of media.
In a way, you are right. In a couple of years it will really be revolutionizing print as we know it. None of these tablets are going to immediately save print, but it will take a couple of years to reorganize newsrooms and change the economic model to support things like the iPad.
